Brian Grenon : multi faced word of science

→ 70% auto-promotion, 15% knowledge, 15% degree

In industry, you degree gets you in the door, your knowledge keeps you there. Self-promotion advances your career
a scientis seeks the truth, an engineer creates it!

Scientist rely on a priory knowledge for advencement of science... Engineers rely on generated data to advance engineering

les ingénieurs on besoin de donnés pour changer et amélioré un processus qu'un scientifique pourrai simplement déduire l'amélioration a faire avec ses conaissances, calculs etc...

In industry you will most likely be working for someone that knows less about your knowledge, skills and ability for the fist time in your life, hence SELF PROMOTION becomes the key of your success. While self-promotion has a bad conotation for non-americans but it can be done professionally and positively

Consulting

  • There is no clearly defined rules and standards, you set the standards
  • Clients continuously change
  • Freedom to publish is unrestricted
  • survival is for the most part dependant upon one's knowledge ans integrity
  • funding depends on client prioryty, market...
→ 75% knowledge, 15% self-promotion, 10% degree

How to survive

  • the reputation of your faculty advisor is the most powerfull tool you have when you leave University
  • if you use it, you have a professional obligation to protect it (dont sit on it)
  • self-promotion : need not to be a bad term and can be done professionally
  • in a industry, think of yourself as a «small buisness», dont expect the company that you work for to provide for you over the long-term
  • you are competing whit every othe employee (they are not collaborators anymore)
  • take time to plan your future

How to self promote

1. Maintain a clear visibility in your work environment
  • attend the right meetings (not all)
  • participate in conferences
2. Publish
  • conferences
  • Journals
  • Patents
3. Select you colleges and collaborators carefully
4. Don't share your ideas until you have fully documented them and protected them
5. build strong professional relationship in and out your workplace
6. in industry, remember you collegues is competiting the same career advancement as you are
7. dont think your current employment as the only job you will ever have
8. Never compromise your standars or ethics for short-term gains.. you will pay in he long-term
9. stay current in the field, read, read, read
10. dont make a commitement you cant keep
11. protect you reputation at all cost
